Oil & Pastel paintings

Karl Bronk's early fascination with art began while living in France and New York City, with the study of original classical paintings in Le Louvre, the MET and other museums and art galleries in Paris and Manhattan. The magic of those artists to replicate the visual world with dabs of oil paint started him on a life of drawing and painting––but it was the bold and daring color interpretations of the Impressionists that led him to art school. Receiving his education as an art major at Salem State College and Montserrat School of Art, he studied under Mark Rauzens, Lisa Fader, Nick Waggman, among others. Launching his career as an art director and illustrator for Boston advertising agencies Karl continued fine art painting in oil and pastel. After leaving the advertising field, he devoted himself to exploring the deeper metaphorical qualities of light, color and form of Impressionism, which has since shaped his work in a more interpretive style.

The common belief that Art is an external activity designed for passive viewing undermines the truth that people most often experience art through intellectual curiosity and wonder. In the development of my paintings, preliminary sketches and color studies help to flesh out those qualities in an image that resonate and compel me to paint it. Through my personal interpretation of a scene's mass forms, lines, values, edges, and color shapes, I hope to convey a visual poetic statement that transcends the eye and speaks to the intellectual sensitivities of the mind.
